Quick Verdict: You had me at Melon
Jen and Mel are professional breaker upperers. People come to see them with their relationship woes, and they hatch a plan to break them up with their respective partner.
Although there are hints of Taika Waititi style, this is definitely it’s own film. Written and directed by the two leads, Jackie Van Beek and Madeleine Sami, they have created a truly original comedy that had me in stitches.
I have a real soft spot for New Zealand comedy and this is no exception. The writing is sharp and the execution of the comedy is brilliant. But the thing that really elevates this film is the relationship of the two leads. The chemistry between is amazing and you can tell that they feed off each other. I’d happily watch more films they write and direct.
If you want a laugh-out-loud comedy with a fabulous break up montage and an amazing rendition of Celine Dion’s ‘It’s all coming back to me,’ plus, if you enjoyed Hunt For The Wilderpeople, What We Do In The Shadows, Flight Of The Conchords, basically any kind of New Zealand comedy, then this is for you. I will be rewatching this again tomorrow. I loved it.
