Quick Verdict: The Bourne Stoned Identity
I’m not a fan of Jesse Eisenberg or Kristen Stewart. Which begs the question, why did I watch this film? The last film I saw with both of them in was Adventureland, and I hated that. Of the films that I’ve seen them in, the only ones I’ve enjoyed was Zombieland for Jesse and Panic Room for Kristen. So not a great track record for me.
American Ultra is about Mike and Phoebe, a stoner couple whose life is turned upside down when it turns out Mike is in fact a fully trained government experiment, capable of murdering a bunch of people with a spoon if needed.
The overall experience of the film was fine, but I did wonder if the director was even sure he was making a comedy. It had some funny moments but the main feel of the film didn’t really fit. It was just a kind of Jason Bourne movie with a few funny comments because the main character is constantly stoned and has stoner logic.
Stand out for me was John Leguizamo as drug dealer Rose, who I could have had a lot more of in the film.
So overall it was okay, but not as laugh out loud as I was hoping. I’m sorry Ric. I also watched it the same day as rewatching Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay and Super Troopers 2, so had a lot to live up to.
