The A-Z of Film

E = Eighties

Ah the eighties. Thatcher, mine closures, Challenger Space Shuttle, Chernobyl and John Lennon being shot. It was a pretty naff decade, offset slightly by my birth in 1983.

The best thing about the eighties for me, were the films that came out. A lot of those films were there to cheer you up, put a smile on your face, or at least make you forget about the state of the world at the time. This is probably a factor in why eighties nostalgia is such a big thing at the moment. One that doesn’t seem to fading anytime soon. Many films are being set in the eighties along with Stranger Things and The Goldbergs all doing brilliantly on TV.

So why are the eighties so good? I’ve picked a film from each year of the decade which have made me smile.

1980: Airplane!

It has something like a joke every twenty-seven seconds. You can’t argue with that surely. And stop calling me Shirley!

1981: The Cannonball Run

The first and best Cannonball Run film. A car race with hilarious escapades. What more could you want?

1982: E.T. The Extra Terrestrial

Heartwarming family fun. Where else can you watch special agents hunt children armed with shotguns?

1983: Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi

I don’t care what you think of the Ewoks. It’s nice to think there’s a planet out there inhabited by fluffy little friendly bears.

1984: Ghostbusters

Stay Puft and Slimer. Good ghostly fun.

1985: Back To The Future

Great Scott! A film so good a band is named after the main character.

1986: Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Star Trek + time travel + whales = amazing

1987: Dirty Dancing

Nobody puts this movie in the corner.

1988: Twins

Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger are twins. I don’t think I need to say anymore.

1989: Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade

A great adventure that delivers the excitement of the original. Not as good, but a damm close second.

So if you find yourself worrying about the troubles of the world today, why not stick on one of these great films. Obviously I’ve missed off some great films, I do apologise. If there are any you think need mentioning, please comment below. Honourable mentions to the following films:

The Empire Strikes Back

Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Goonies

Labyrinth

Heathers

Gremlins

The Blues Brothers

And many many many many many many many more
