Quick Verdict – Voldemort is a darling.
So earlier this year Wes Anderson released his eighth directorial picture, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and this time he’s got 70% of Hollywood involved. We’ve got F. Murray Abraham, Mathieu Amalric, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Jason Schwartzman, Léa Seydoux, Tilda Swinton, Tom Wilkinson, Owen Wilson and Tony Revolori. Wow, that’s a long list and they are all great. Yes I have missed someone off the list, but we’ll get on to him later.
So the story revolves around Zero Moustafa, the Lobby Boy at The Grand Budapest Hotel and the Concierge, Gustave H. When one of Gustave H’s dear friends dies, he is left a priceless painting and what comes next is theft, murder, a prison break, a cat, some cakes and quite possible the greatest caper movie in years. Now people may think I’m exaggerating about how good this film is, but honestly it’s brilliant. This film has great action, great suspense, great humour, great acting, great style, great characters and most importantly in a caper movie like this, a great plot.
The one actor I missed out earlier plays the role of Gustave H, and that is Ralph Fiennes. This may sound like another exaggeration, but I think this man should be nominated for an Oscar. He is first class. He is charming and witty and manages to light up every scene he’s in. ‘Get your hands off my Lobby Boy.’
It’s hard to explain how good this film is without ruining it. So my best advice is to watch it and make your mind up for yourself. It’s now out on DVD, so rent it, buy it or download it. Just make sure you watch it. ‘I don’t know what sort of cream they’ve put on you down at the morgue, but I want some.’
My favourite film of the year so far.
