Quick Verdict – The great adventures of Peter Venkman
Now I have to be very careful what I say about The Life Aquatic as it’s my wife’s favourite film. Thankfully I also love the film, so I should be safe. ‘Son of a bitch. I’m sick of these dolphins.’
Unbelievably, this is now 10 years old. Wes Anderson’s fourth directorial feature stars Bill Murray as oceanographer Steve Zissou, on a revenge mission to hunt down the Jaguar Shark that killed his friend. Bill is joined by a great ensemble including Anjelica Huston, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Michael Gambon, Noah Taylor, and my two favourites, Jeff Goldblum as Alistair Hennessey and in my opinion the man who steals the show, Willem Dafoe as Klaus Daimler.
Now we’ve come to expect the beautiful visuals in a Wes Anderson film these days, but this film is where he really hits his stride. The boat is a stroke of genius. The scene where he walks through the boat really shows the effort that Wes goes to get the shot he wants, the finale is spectacular and a real pay-off and my favourite scene is when the crew of the Belafonte storm a hotel in an attempt to rescue Owen Wilson’s Ned and Alistair.
It’s a joy to watch this film. It has humour, action, heart, tears and also a kick ass soundtrack. Seu Jorge’s David Bowie covers in Portuguese are amazing.
‘Don’t point that gun at him, he’s an unpaid intern.’
