Quick Verdict – Super Homage

It’s hard to believe that J.J. Abrams has only directed four feature films. It seems like he’s been in our lives forever, what with Lost, Alias, Mission Impossible and the Star Trek franchise. His current track record has actually made me excited for the new Star Wars film next year.

His third directing outing is no exception. Super 8 was released in 2011 and follows the lives of a group of children who, whilst making their own zombie movie during the summer break, witness the crash of a military train. Afterwards, unexplained occurrences start happening and people start disappearing.

The storyline is great, you care about the children, and they have the right mix of characters in there. We have emotion, we have excitement, we have suspense and we get our pay off in the finale.

Now I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but if you want to watch a modern day E.T. or The Goonies, then Super 8 is for you. I’m not claiming its better, but J.J. Abrams gives it a good go. You can tell this film is a huge homage to the great family movies of the past, and I’m sure Spielberg and Lucas gave him a big pat on the back after watching it. You couldn’t ask for a more perfect family movie, and is equally good on repeat viewing.

Watch this is you like –

  • E.T.
  • The Goonies
  • Jaws
  • Close Encounters of the Third Kind
  • Star Wars
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • I could go on………….
